Discover the Charm of Serifos Hotels: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

For those who want an authentic, calm and intimate experience, the smaller and less touristy Greek Islands of the Aegean are an unforgettable alternative, and Serifos is one of them. Here are our top Greek hideaways in Serifos.

Greece is one of the most characteristic getaways in the Mediterranean. Apart from the mainland, there are 300 inhabited Greek islands to choose from, meaning it has many unexplored islands and coves. A majority of people around the world are familiar with Greek islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and Rhodes. Yet, beyond the beauty of those islands and the jet-set who visit them traditionally, there are rather secluded and beautiful islands. Serifos is one of them. As the hidden gem of the western Cyclades islands, Serifos is yet to be discovered by mass visitors. This island, which has carried hundreds of myths to this day, is famed for its raw beauty, sugar-cubed houses and incredible number of pristine beaches. Here are our top boutique spots to stay on the island, beautiful stories behind them, and what makes them different.

Captain's House Serifos: A Gateway to Traditional Greek Village Holidays

Nestled in the charming lower part of Chora, Captain's House Serifos offers a unique blend of history and comfort, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking an authentic Greek village holiday. This boutique hotel, originally a stone townhouse built by Captain Yiorghis Peloponnisios in the late 19th century, has been lovingly restored by Emmy and Manos Peloponnisios. Its preservation of traditional architecture and decor provides guests with a deep connection to the island's heritage.

This boutique hotel embodies the spirit of Serifos's seafaring past. The careful restoration undertaken by Emmy and Manos Peloponnisios ensures guests are enveloped in the authentic atmosphere of a bygone era, without sacrificing modern comforts.

A 19th-century townhouse in Serifos: A Journey Through Time at Captain's House

Yiorghis Peloponnisios was born in Serifos in 1868 with an origin from a nautical family. He worked for several years as a pilot for the steamers and ships during their loading on the mining sites of Koutalas and Mega Livadi in Serifos. Emmy and Manos inherited the house in 2008 and their dream since then was to restore it with respect to its special characteristics. In 2017, they quit their busy life in Athens, moved to Serifos and concentrated on the restoration of the family house. The house has not witnessed any major changes and was restored to keep its original atmosphere.

Experiencing the Authentic Charm

Captain's House Serifos invites guests into a world where traditional Cycladic charm meets neoclassical elegance. From the dark red doors, a symbol of the family's affluence, to the marble techniques adorning the hallway, every detail tells a story of tradition and pride. The hotel's accommodations, including two bedrooms with iron double beds and a traditional Cycladic sala, offer a deep dive into the island's architectural and cultural heritage.

Emma and Manos are finishing the last details on the cellar of the house say the wine cellar was the first space of the whole building, constructed according to the typical Cycladic and Serifian architecture, long before the upper house. “It will give the possibility to our guests to book the whole building, the main house and the cellar, and accommodate up to 8 persons.”

“Serifos is a small island and we feel very lucky to be able to spend our time here. We have the chance to slow down in our everyday life, to be able to see the sunrise and the colours of the sunset every day, to take long walks by nature, connect with ourselves, and appreciate the small things,” say the owners. “We also enjoy taking care of our family’s old vineyards and cultivating our small garden with fresh vegetables. Our guests are the lucky ones to taste our homemade wine and our summer fruits!” Visiting Captain’s House is certainly an authentic, local experience. “Our guests are welcomed to our family’s old house and history that gives them the chance to travel back in time. Our hospitality comes straight from our heart and we are going beyond the mile for them.”

Experience Local Life and Sustainable Practices

Staying at the charming Captain’s House not only promises a welcoming and homely atmosphere but also opens the door to a wealth of local experiences unique to this Serifos location. Emma and Manos, the hospitable owners, highly recommend immersing yourself in the quaint charm of Chora by meandering through its narrow alleys, observing the daily life of locals, and savouring the traditional "ypovrihio" (a vanilla-flavoured treat) in what is arguably the most vibrant and colourful square in the Cyclades. Ascending to the hilltop where the Venetian castle stands, you're promised breathtaking panoramic views of the cerulean sea and surrounding islands, offering a moment of serenity at dawn that's truly unforgettable.

Spring brings an extra layer of allure to Serifos, with the island’s trails surrounded by the fragrant aromas of thyme, wild lavender, and other herbs. Participating in a "panighyri" (a traditional religious festival) allows visitors to connect with the island's culture through food and wine shared by the locals. Exploring the historic iron mines on the island's southern shores, including the preserved sites at Mega Livadi and Koutalas Bay, enriches the understanding of Serifos's heritage and its community.

Another notable aspect of Captain’s House is the meticulous attention Emma and Manos devote to every detail, from the preservation of the house to the eco-friendly practices implemented during guests' stays. They take pride in offering local delights, such as fresh eggs from their chickens, ensuring an authentic and sustainable living experience.

Captain’s House is more than just accommodation; it's a repository of joyous memories, carefully curated to ensure that every guest departs with the desire to return, carrying with them the nostalgia and beauty of a genuine Serifos experience.
